It was with great regret on Sunday the 11th that our Clerks of the Course at our first Brands meeting decided it was appropriate to abandon the meeting in the interests of rider safety.
Just before lunch a large oil spill had resulted in us needing to wash the circuit at Clark Curve with significant amounts of detergent and water from the Brands bowser. The weather stayed dry through the early afternoon – with the vast bulk of the circuit remaining dry - yet the section at Clark Curve remained quite wet and the transition from dry to wet surfaces was starting to catch out riders. We observed three accidents in quick succession at this location and had a number of reports from experienced riders with regard to the surface conditions.
The Clerks conducted a detailed inspection and this led to the conclusion that as this section was not drying, so in the interests of safety of all riders yet to race we were better served by choosing to abandon the second half of the day.
The outcome has been that all classes have effectively lost the second race at Brands on Sunday - so no one class has been more disadvantaged than any other.
With the circumstances that caused the abandonment being outside our control then the Club will have no option but void those races. There are no plans at this stage to rerun that content at any of our further meetings - there isn't really the capacity to do that throughout the rest of our season.
We also advise all members that no refunds can be available in these circumstances, the costs for running the Brands meeting are all committed and the revenue does need to be retained in order to cover those costs.
The Clerks and those of us in the Race Office received many positive comments from our Members who felt on balance that the right decision had been taken.
We were then all surprised at 4pm when the heavens opened with a thunderstorm - so perhaps some classes also dodged a bullet there.
So we are disappointed our first meeting ended this way but thank all our Members for their understanding and positive comments on the decision.
We look forward to seeing those of you who are racing at Silverstone in four weeks’ time.
